€720,000 top lot at the Oldenburg Stallion Licencing

January 23, 2024

The 3 year old colt Verbier was named champion of the 2024 Oldenburg Stallion Licensing in Germany on Sunday 21 January 2024 and sold to Sweden for €720,000.

Successful dressage horses come from various breed societies, with the German ‘Oldenburger Verband’, popularly considered to be one of, if not the, most successful and prestigious.

The Oldenburger Verband licences stallions once a year. Only those 3 year old stallions with the very best bloodlines plus outstanding movement, physical attributes and temperament are licenced. The top few elite of those stallions are awarded the coveted ‘premium’ licensed status.

In January 2023 the annual licensing event saw a collection of 39 pre-selected colts be presented at the stallion days, of which 22 were accepted for licensing as breeding stallions with the Oldenburger Verband. Six stallions made it into the premium ring to achieve the coveted title of Premium Licenced Stallion.

The average price for a licenced stallion at the 2024 auction following the licensing was €149,357, with the top 3 lots knocked down at €720,000, €400,000 and €120,000.

The record price for an Oldenburg stallion at a licencing auction was achieved in January 2023 when the top lot 3 year old Premium stallion was knocked down for €1.25 million (pictured above).
